WHY DO WE NEED ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATES?
Almost half of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions come from the energy we use every day - at home and when we travel. These carbon dioxide emissions contribute to climate change and even small improvements to the energy efficiency of our homes could result in a significant reduction in these emissions.
WHY IS THE EPC IMPORTANT?
Nearly 40 per cent of the UK's energy consumption arises from the way in which our 25 million buildings are lit, heated and used.
The British Government is leading the introduction of a number of energy and cost-saving measures to make all buildings more efficient. These measures are being applied across all European Union countries and are in line with the European Directive for the Energy Performance of Buildings.
EPC's for residential properties being offered for sale became required by law in 2007. EPC's for newly rented properties became law from 1st October 2008. EPC's for commercial properties being offered for sale will start to be rolled out later in 2008.
The Energy Performance Certificate is part of these new measures to improve property efficiency. It includes suggestions to enable property owners to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. This should mean lower energy bills for the occupiers, and should make homes more attractive to potential purchasers.
